01 / THE EXPERIENCE

Is this cruise
worth your afternoon?

If it’s your first time in Chicago, an architecture cruise is a good place to start. You don’t need to know anything about buildings to enjoy it.

A guide explains what you’re looking at while the boat takes you through downtown. It’s also a welcome chance to sit down if you’ve already spent the morning walking. The main question is whether you’d enjoy 90 minutes of views and commentary.

The 90-minute river architecture cruise keeps you on the boat for the whole trip. You’ll see the buildings from the water; you won’t go inside them or get off along the way.

OUR ADVICE

Allow about two hours at the dock and on the boat: 30 minutes before departure, then the 90-minute cruise. Add your travel time on top. It’s easy to underestimate that when you’re planning the rest of the day.

ALONG THE RIVER

What the riverfront looks like

These photos give you a feel for the area around the cruise. If you get there early, take a walk along the water before checking in.

You’ll probably enjoy it if you…

  • Are visiting Chicago for the first time.
  • Like taking photos or hearing a little local history.
  • Want to see downtown without another long walk.

Check another option if you…

  • Want dinner on board or a private boat.
  • Need step-free boarding that hasn’t been confirmed.
  • Want to go out onto Lake Michigan.
02 / GETTING THERE

Where to go
and when to arrive

Head to 400 N Michigan Avenue, then make your way down to the dock. Give yourself time for that last part: being outside the building isn’t the same as being ready to board.

MEETING POINT · GET THERE ON YOUR OWN

Wendella Tours & Cruises

400 N Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60611

At the base of the Wrigley Building, beside the northwest corner of the DuSable (Michigan Avenue) Bridge. Check your ticket for the assigned dock.

BEFORE BOARDING

Aim to be at the dock
30 minutes early.

That means down by the boat, not still looking for parking. Keep your confirmation handy so you can check which dock you need.

01 / RIDESHARE

Taking an Uber or Lyft?

Enter 400 N Michigan Avenue. Once you’re dropped off, you’ll still need to find the dock entrance and get down to river level.

02 / DRIVING

Driving downtown?

There’s no parking at the dock. The operator lists garages at 430 N Rush Street and AMA Plaza among the nearby options. Check the rate first and allow time to walk over.

03 / PUBLIC TRANSIT

Taking the L?

The operator suggests Grand on the Red Line as one option. Check current directions and service, then factor in the walk from the station.

WORK OUT YOUR ARRIVAL TIME

When should you get there?

Enter a departure time to see when to arrive and roughly when you’ll be back.

Be at the dock1:30 PM
Boarding around1:45 PM
Back around3:30 PM

This calculates your timing; it doesn’t show available sailings or book a ticket. Arrive 30 minutes early. Boarding usually starts 15 minutes before departure. Parking and getting to the dock take extra time. Check available departure times.

03 / THE ROUTE

What happens
on the cruise?

Wendella advertises all three river branches, including Goose Island and Chinatown, with more than 50 architectural landmarks. The course can change. This is a boat ride throughout; neighborhood names are route references, not places where you get off.

GET YOUR BEARINGS

Look for Wolf Point, Centennial Fountain and the Riverwalk along the advertised route. Departure and return are at the Michigan Avenue dock; this cruise stays on the river.

The Wrigley Building

Look for the clock tower near the Michigan Avenue departure point.

Marina City

The rounded balconies make these towers easy to recognize from the water.

  1. 01
    BOARDING

Get checked in and grab a seat.

Show your confirmation and follow the crew’s directions. Seats are first come, first served. Head outside for the open-air view, or look for a sheltered spot if it’s chilly. Your boat’s layout may vary.

  2. 02
    ON THE WATER

    Follow along with the guide.

The guide connects Chicago’s post-fire rebuilding with its skyscraper designs. Look for the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Willis Tower and Marina City’s rounded balconies. Building entry isn’t included.

  3. 03
    AFTER THE CRUISE

You’ll return to the same starting point.

Allow a little time to get off the boat and back up to the street. If you’re making dinner plans afterward, don’t set the reservation for the minute your cruise is due back.

ALONG THE RIVER

Buildings and bridges along the way

You’ll have plenty to photograph besides the tall buildings. Keep an eye out for the bridgehouses and the view as you pass beneath the bridges.

04 / ON BOARD

What’s included,
and what to bring

Included in the ticket

  • A 90-minute river sightseeing cruise.
  • Live English-language narration.
  • Seating and onboard restroom facilities.

You’ll pay extra for

  • Travel to the dock and parking.
  • Food and drinks purchased on board.
  • Any optional gratuity.

Bring a layer.

Pack sunglasses and sunscreen for a sunny day, plus a layer for sitting outside. In colder weather, bring a proper coat. Rain alone doesn’t mean the trip is canceled; the captain makes that call.

Check your tour’s current details

The bar takes cards.

You’ll need a card for drinks and snacks. Most boats have a heated or air-conditioned lower cabin, though the operator lists Ouilmette as an exception. Restrooms are downstairs, so ask about access if stairs are difficult for you.

See current tour inclusions

Need step-free access? Call before booking.

Wendella lists West Dock wheelchair boarding, an upper-deck ramp and ADA restrooms; elevators are available on some boats. The featured booking listing still says “not wheelchair accessible” and asks travelers to contact the operator. Confirm your exact sailing before paying.

Ask about the route from street level, your mobility equipment and access between decks. Don’t assume another boat’s facilities apply to your departure.

ALONG THE RIVER

Have some time after the cruise?

You could get something to eat or keep walking along the river. These photos show the surrounding area; any café stop or meal would be on your own, separate from the cruise.

Before you leave the hotel

A quick check before you head out:

  • Booking confirmation on your phone
  • Your departure time and dock details
  • A layer for the river breeze
  • A payment card and a charged phone

Changing tables are listed, and strollers must fold for storage. Don’t bring outside alcohol or weapons; the operator also notes security screening before boarding. Review the tour’s booking information.

06 / COMMON QUESTIONS

A few things
you might be wondering

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You’ll need to get to 400 N Michigan Avenue on your own. Check your confirmation for the dock instructions. See the arrival guide.

Does this cruise go onto Lake Michigan?

No, this is the river-only tour. The same operator sells a separate lake-and-river cruise, and the names are easy to mix up. Double-check your selected tour before paying.

Can I bring the kids?

Yes. The operator lists adult tickets for ages 13 and up, child tickets for ages 4–12, and free admission under 4. Kids under 4 still need a ticket. Changing tables and folded-stroller storage are listed. Check the age options when you book. You know your kids best: consider whether they’ll enjoy a 90-minute boat ride with commentary.

What if it rains?

Rain alone usually doesn’t cancel the cruise. Wendella says captain-canceled severe-weather sailings are refunded; follow your booking provider’s instructions. If you cancel yourself, your ticket’s cancellation deadline applies.

Can I cancel my booking?

The featured option lists a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, based on Chicago local time. It lists no refund for cancellations less than 24 hours before. Check your own confirmation for the terms that apply to your ticket. Read the current cancellation policy.

Are seats assigned? Which side should I choose?

Seats are first come, first served. There are buildings on both sides of the river, so don’t stress too much about picking a side. Choose a spot where you’re comfortable and can see clearly, and keep the aisle open when taking photos.

Can I bring a stroller or a wheelchair?

Strollers are allowed if folded. For wheelchairs, confirm the assigned dock, boat and equipment requirements before paying. Read the access note and call Wendella before buying. Ask about your specific departure rather than relying on a general accessibility label.

What happens if I am running late?

Call the provider listed on your confirmation. There’s no guarantee the boat will wait or that you can switch to a later sailing. Plan on reaching the dock 30 minutes early, and leave extra time for parking or the walk down from the street.
